Cabbage Tree Creek (QLD, Australia)

Party: Tom Morey and I

This was a creek that had slipped under my radar whilst I was living in Brisbane. Tom had visited it on a solo trip and it seemed a perfect way to catch up with him and do a mini adventure on a drizzly, overcast day.

I dropped Alanna off at the airport and then joined friends for an afternoon bouldering session by one of the Cedar Creek swimming holes. It was a nice spot and the location took the bite off the hot and humid weather. We probably spent equal parts bouldering and relaxing 🙂Back in Brisbane we chatted and feasted on some Thai takeaway at Heather’s. It was late when I drove back to Luna and Suzann’s where we’d been staying off and on now for nearly two weeks! Thanks!

I had a slow start in the morning and packed, laundered, cleaned and packed. Running a bit late I headed to Tom’s grabbing fuel on the way. We quickly packed some gear and headed west up to the small mountain town Mt Nebo. Tom directed us to the end of a local street and we parked at the end on the edge of D’Aguilar National Park. We finalised gear and had a short walk to the creek where were immediately welcomed by the cabbage trees which I still recall feeling somewhat out of place when I moved to Brisbane. We proceeded down the creek and quickly arrived at the first drop which was easily negotiable by downclimbing though perhaps it could become tricky in higher water. Tom did comment that the water was noticeably lower than last time he visited, but the water was also much clearer which more than made up for it.

The next few drops were all spaced fairly close together and at least once we didn’t even bother coiling our rope. We both agreed it would make a great beginner trip especially since you could pretty much walk around any drop if you really wanted to… Like most creeks around Brisbane it never really became what I’d call a canyon, but it was undeniably a pretty creek.

We’d used a 30m rope for all the first drops, but pulled a ~50m out for the last one. We’d already had a bunch of wades and a swim and found the water surprisingly warm but this was the first time I got my head wet as for some reason I had judged the pool shallower than what it actually was. I stepped out and gave Tom a good laugh when I disappeared completely.

After half a k more creek walking we hit the old firetrail. We climbed it steeply up onto the ridge to the west and followed it running parallel to the ck before dropping back down to cross it and then head back to the car. All in all it ended up being less than 3hrs, but it was a nice short outing and the perfect fit for our lazy Sunday activity. Thanks Tom!
