Our favourite retail stores
Summit Gear:
Not only has this family-run business been selling specialist outdoor gear in the Blue Mountains for more than 30 years, they are also pretty much the only pack manufacturers who continue to make their products in Australia.
Their Katoomba store has a good selection of outdoor gear, including specialist canyoning shoes during the warmer months, a great collection of topo maps and a good mix of everything else you could need. They also stock static rope, harnesses, descenders and climbing hardware, not to mention their specifically made canyoning packs.
The Glenbrook store is much smaller, and is more targeted at the tourist crowd (lots of fancy outdoor clothing), but if you give them a call they will bring any items you want down here if it is going to be more convenient than a trip to Katoomba.
Good service from staff who know and love the Aussie bush.

Mountain Equipment:
If you are in the city or on the north shore, Mountain Equipment is probably your best bet. We have a bit of a soft spot for them given they are a sponsor of the Sydney Uni Bushwalkers, and provide members with a 10% discount on everything they sell (which really ads up if you’re a gear freak!)
They have a huge range of good outdoor equipment that covers pretty much everything from walking shoes to backpacks, tents and climbing harnesses.
They are larger than Summit, so generally have a slightly more substantial selection of gear in stock.

Online canyoning specialists…
Climbing Anchors:
These guys have the absolute best collection of gear for canyoners, climbers, cavers, mountaineers and anyone else who needs specialist items to explore the outdoors. They also sell the popular Tendon static ropes, at very cheap prices.
They have a physical store, if you happen to be passing through Coffs Harbour, but for the rest of us they provide great online sales which are fast and cheap.
Run by a passionate climber who has great links to the canyoning community, they have a wealth of knowledge and experience with the products they sell. (How many online retailers put the mobile number of the owner on their site!)
Best of all, they love students, so members of most university clubs get a 12.5% discount on everything they buy!

Love your site. Re gear, Alpsport at West Ryde (Victoria Road) are great – helpful and friendly and know their stuff, don’t know email address or phone, sorry.
